Respiratory PCR Testing

When you’re experiencing symptoms like cough, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, fever, body aches, or even nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, a Respiratory PCR test can help quickly and accurately identify the pathogen responsible. Early and accurate diagnosis supports appropriate treatment, helping you recover sooner and avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

  • Which viruses does Clinical Labs’ Respiratory PCR test detect?

Our Respiratory PCR Testing is available across all states and detects a broad range of common respiratory pathogens, including:

    • Influenza (flu)
    • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
    • COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2)
    • Parainfluenza
    • Human Rhinovirus
    • Human Metapneumovirus
    • Human Adenovirus
    • And several other respiratory viruses / bacterial infections, based on your state and doctor's request
  • Why does early diagnosis of respiratory viruses matter?

Early identification allows your doctor to provide targeted treatments, such as antivirals for flu or COVID-19, reducing the risk of severe illness and complications, particularly in high-risk individuals.

It also helps limit the spread of infection through timely implementation of control measures, which is especially important in high-risk environments like aged care and healthcare facilities.

  • Where can I get a Respiratory PCR test?

To get tested, you’ll need a referral from your doctor. With a valid request form, you can visit any Clinical Labs collection centre - we accept all pathology request forms. To find your nearest location, visit our locations page.

For testing in Western Australia, visit the locations page on our website  and select 'Respiratory/Flu Testing WA' to find a suitable site near you.

  • Do antibiotics help with viral infections?

No. Antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections, not viruses.

Avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use is critical in preventing antimicrobial resistance. If you have cold or flu symptoms, speak to your GP about whether testing is right for you before starting antibiotics.

  • COVID-19 Testing

Is COVID-19 included in Clinical Labs’ Respiratory PCR Testing?

Yes. Testing for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is included in Clinical Labs’ Respiratory Multiplex PCR panel, available nationwide. A doctor’s referral is required.
