Patient Instructions - Urine

Urine Collection for Adults
& Toilet-Trained Children

  • Equipment

    • 1 x 70ml Yellow-top Container
  • Procedure

    FOR FEMALES

A midstream specimen of urine is required in order to minimise the degree of bacterial contamination, so that bacteria from the possible urinary tract infection can be detected.

    • Wash hands thoroughly.
    • Cleanse the vagina from front to back twice using a clean wet cloth and hold labia apart and commence passing urine.
    • After a few seconds, without stopping the flow, introduce the sterile container into the stream for a further 4-6 seconds, or until the container is half-filled.
    • Avoid contaminating the inside of the container with your finger or contact with vulva.
    • If you have been provided a urine container with a collection device in the lid do not remove the safety sticker. Avoid contaminating the inside of the lid by ensuring the sticker remains in place.
    • After urine is collected, replace lid on the container ensuring correct threading and secure closure.
    • Write your surname, first name, date of birth and the word 'Urine' on the container. Also write time and date the sample was collected.
    • If the urine sample cannot be delivered within 1 hour, the container should be stored in the fridge at around 4 degrees Celsius. Please ensure the sample is delivered to a Clinical Labs collection centre within 24 hours.

Note: The collection staff are required to check your details (surname, first name, date of birth and date and time of collection on the container label) against the pathology request form to ensure the sample is matched to the doctor’s request. This is done to ensure the safety and security of reporting your test results.
